Youth Catechesis

Youth Catechesis is very important in the Lutheran tradition.  All 6th and 7th graders go through Luther’s Small Catechism with pastor during the school year.  There is a separate 8th grade class that includes a review of the Small Catechism, bible history, a study of the Divine Liturgy, the doctrine of vocation and highlights of the Augsburg Confession.   Our students also get involved in the Sunday service through our acolyte program.

Sunday School

St. John’s provides a Sunday School for 2-year-olds through 8th graders.  Every Sunday during the school year our children are taught a bible story and Lutheran music.  The children gather at 9 am in the church nave for a devotion with pastor before they head to the classrooms.

Teens

Our teens meet once a month on a Sunday evening with pastor to study.  A summer outing and service opportunities are planned during these meetings also.

At Home

Daily devotional helps are given to each family.  These binders help parents teach their children the truths of Scripture.  They also help our children learn favorite verses of Scripture and the truths of the Small Catechism by heart.

VBS

During June, children from our congregation and the community get together for a week long Vacation Bible School.  Each night they learn a bible story, songs, do a craft and are served a meal.  We end the week by singing in church on Sunday followed by a potluck with outdoor games.

Christmas for Kids

On one Saturday in December, the children of our congregation and community get together for “Christmas for Kids”.  The children practice their songs and parts for the Christmas Eve Service, decorate cookies, make Christmas cards for the shut-ins, sing carols and have lunch.

Parochial School

St. John's is committed to the promotion of Christian education.  Athough we no longer run a school, we pay the tuition for our members who attend St. John's Lutheran School in Redwood Falls or Samuel Lutheran in Marshall.

Music

Music is a huge part of our church life.  The Sunday School sings every week and about once a month in the Divine Service.  Our Christmas Eve service consists of many of Christianity's timeless carols.  A junior chime choir also gives our kids a chance to "sing to the Lord a new song!" (Psalm 96:1).
